I opened this Sony in the workshop lab on the second day, and first of all, I checked its main power supply. Voltage was coming on the 19-volt socket. There is a MOSFET in front of it that passes the main supply. This MOSFET was working perfectly. I found a fuse open on the same track. This fuse provides supply to the 19-volt power supply, the 12-volt regulator, and the 3.3-volt plus 5-volt regulator. It is a common thing that if the main power line is disconnected, the system IC will remain silent.

  • Measure the 19V input on the mainboard.
  • Inspect MOSFET and fuse.
  • Use ohmmeter to confirm any short circuit.

Why did the fuse open? Now I want to know the reason for this. For this, I checked the short circuit on the 19-volt track. I found a resistance of about 19 ohms at the input of the 12-volt regulator. This was the reason for the fuse to blow. Now the problem was that this track was going to three regulators. I adopted the smart method and checked the entire line with an ohmmeter. The place where I found the lowest resistance was the two ceramic capacitors installed at the input of the 12-volt regulator.

From this testing, I found out that one of the two ceramic capacitors on the input of the voltage regulator was faulty. I carefully separated it from the circuit, and it was the capacitor that was shorted. I checked the short circuit on the main line, and it was gone. I replaced the faulty part, whose value was 10 uF.
