Introduction

Recently, an older TCL LCD model was brought to my workshop by a customer who was facing a peculiar issue. This pin requires a certain level of voltage, typically between 15-20V, to operate correctly. However, my multimeter readings showed that the VCC pin was only receiving 2.5V, which was far below the necessary threshold.

Low voltage on the VCC pin is usually caused by an issue in the startup circuit. Startup circuits often consist of resistors and capacitors that provide the initial voltage to the IC before it starts regulating power.

3. Tracing the Fault

To identify the root cause, I traced the VCC pin’s connection. I discovered that the VCC pin was connected to the positive terminal of the main capacitor through two resistors in series, labeled as R13 and R14 on the board. These resistors act as a voltage divider to provide the correct startup voltage to the IC.

Using a multimeter, I tested the resistance of R13 and R14. While R13 was functioning correctly with a value of 1MΩ, R14 was completely open, meaning it had failed and was no longer conducting current. This failure prevented the startup voltage from reaching the IC, causing the low voltage issue.

Repair Process

1. Component Replacement

2. Testing the Repair

After replacing R14, I reassembled the power board and connected the TV to a power source. Upon powering it on, I observed that the standby light turned on immediately, indicating that the power board was now functioning correctly. Lessons Learned

This case highlights the importance of proper fault diagnosis in TV repair. Although the problem appeared severe at first glance, it was caused by a single failed resistor. Resistors, despite being small and inexpensive components, play a critical role in the operation of circuits.

The systematic approach to fault finding—checking voltages, identifying the startup circuit, and testing components—helped pinpoint the issue quickly. This repair emphasizes the value of understanding circuit design and using basic diagnostic tools like a multimeter to identify and fix problems efficiently.
